While I have not actually been down to a single Singaporean cosplay event, as in addition to my general perception that Singaporean cosplayers are not THAT talented, I do somewhat like the 2D versions better in the case of Bishoujos or lolis (though I don’t think I see many lolis being cosplayed).

But THIS cosplayer from this year’s Cosfest, will do quite a bit, no make that A LOT, to change my perspective:

Really have no idea WHAT’S up with the bunny ears… I don’t think Haruhi herself will wear that with her North High school uniform. I’m not sure how Otaku this cosplayer is, as I wouldn’t consider a Cosplay Otaku as “fully Otaku”, because cosplay is generally inspired by anime/popular (non-VN/non-Bishoujo) games and not other media forms found in 2 dimensional Japanese subculture. In addition to watching anime, I guess they gotta work quite hard to fund their past time as well, as those costumes are by no means cheap.

In fact over at double’s blog, it seems the cosplayer has commented using some errr, icky pop culture speak such as “glam”. Specifically she said “yay! i see pics (: thanks a lot! haha but the last one’s unglam!*cries*” which actually shows that she is more “normal” than more hardcore cosplayers? I mean heck, I really shouldn’t be segregating her like that, since I myself have been trying to establish the normality of Otaku in general.

However, it does hint that the cosplayer in question has some inside info about Otaku fetishes which in this case is the Usagi-mimi (rabbit-ears) even though it isn’t done particularly well. I don’t know what’s so great about usagi-mimi personally, even though neko-mimi isn’t bad at all… some times. Depends on how its portrayed really.

Anyway, the increasing attendence and popularity of cosplay in Singapore does show that there is a vibrant and active Singaporean cosplay community which is somewhat seperated from the Otakusphere. Can’t find many female moetakus and we don’t see anyone that can do a convincing Yutaka (the moe blob from Lucky Star). I’m not really into cosplay, so I don’t know much about it. But I can feel the general clout that they weld, since Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew took a photo with them at one of the events! Can’t find an online pic for solid proof, but Singaporeans who have been in touch with the local papers should have seen him.
