I almost gave this one a skip since I’m already a hardcore Lucky Star nut, but after 2 paragraphs, the review gripped me till the end. ANN really has to improve on the summary of their reviews because the quality of the summary totally sucks compared to the review itself as a large part of what deterred me from reading the review was the summary itself. The ANN review opens with:
Lucky Star is what Seinfeld might have been had it been animated, featured high school girls instead of adults, and slanted specifically at hard-core otaku. It is a show about nothing, one which lacks any semblance of a plot and seeks to derive its entertainment value from inane conversations about mundane topics and more anime, manga, and game references than you can shake a Popsicle stick at. The way it progresses, one might almost expect the Ramen Nazi to pop up at some point and say, “no ramen for you!”
This is a powerful opening and asseses Lucky Star very fairly, but is nothing compared to what followed. I don’t know whether all of ANN’s reviews are of this quality, as this is my first time reading an ANN review, but I am thoroughly impressed. It manages to explain what makes Lucky Star hardcore to a non-hardcore audience effectively, while being enjoyable to be read by the hardcore as well. An incredible feat. You can check out the full review over here.
Yeah yeah, critisize me for writing a review of a review, but its that good. XD
